It was 1991 when Ethiopia began emerging from a socialist education system to a federal system. By 2009, there were marked increases in the number of children accessing public education along with decreased illiteracy and drop-out rates. However, the poor and rural areas of Ethiopia were not participating in these positive education trends. This was especially apparent in the category of female youth literacy which was below 50% in 2009.
Also in 2009, Ethiopia was still one of the top 10 countries in the world with...

The 4th Annual Scramble for Ethiopia once again has provided new sponsors for our kids and needed resources for the schools in Ethiopia.
On Friday, August 28th, local golfers gathered at the Valley View Golf Course in Freeman, SD to support the cause of Ethiopia while playing 18 holes on a perfect, late summer day. The winning score was a very competitive 11 under par and the longest drive was just over 280 yards. The teams were comprised of married couples, work associates, regular golfing buddies and new as well as old friends. There was a drawing for a...

In the age of sound bites, quips and memes, we've all become more prone to exaggeration. However, when we say we received a "ton" of books during our recent book drive for Ethiopia, we're not exaggerating at all! We didn't just receive a lot of books, we easily have more than a ton of books, by weight, that will be shipped to our schools in Hosanna and Ottoro for their libraries and to support their English Literacy initiatives.
No, we didn't expect such an overwhelming response. Yes, they were very heavy! But it was all worthwhile in knowing what tremendous impact...

Nobody likes to be "on-hold". Being stuck in the queue of a call center can make it seem like time is standing still.

In Ethiopia, life has been on-hold for weeks and months and circumstances just don't seem to be getting any better. The COVID pandemic initiated a restrictive 5-month state-of-emergency. Double-digit inflation continues unchecked. Heavy rains, erosion and flooding in addition to desert locust infestations are setting the stage for famine. And the internet was just shut-down for the 13th time in 4 years due to political violence and bloodshed. Good news has been hard to find in...

If you were at Adams Thermal Academies in Hosanna and Ottoro, Ethiopia this past week, these were some of the scenes you would have witnessed.

 • Donkey teams straining to pull their tied-down loads through muddy roads and trails

 • Empty school classrooms converted to storehouses piled high with bulk food supplies

 • Busy staff counting and weighing and checking for fairness and justice and good stewardship

 • A field of chairs for waiting and piles of supplies paired together, yet six feet apart for protection

 • Families with hands folded and eyes pointed downward in a familiar posture of uncertainty and need

 • Video cameras and...

Learning in the poorest regions of the world looks quite different than the advanced educational methods we’ve become accustomed to. Adams Thermal Academies in Ethiopia have limited teaching resources. So old-fashioned, printed paper books are still the heart and soul of learning in rural Ethiopia. While there’s no shortage of books in the world, students in Ethiopia are desperately in need of more. And most of us have dozens, if not hundreds, of books we no longer use.

Due to a longer and wetter than expected rainy season, the team in Ethiopia has been unable to take supplies to Ottoro using vehicles – the roads are just too muddy for even four wheel drive vehicles. The best option was to travel on foot or horseback and haul the food supplies on donkeys. The team hitched up the wagons and loaded them with vital food supplies and set out through the mud for Ottoro. It was a long, slow journey and they ran out of daylight before they reached the destination, and so added darkness to the difficult travel...
